Queen Anne Style Furniture
The Queen Anne style of furniture was named after Queen Anne of England who reigned from 1702-1714. The style is known for it’s gentle, fluid lines. Though the style had become popular in England by 1705, it took another 20 years for it to become popular in America.
Queen Anne style of furniture came into prominence due to the Industrial Revolution. People had more money to spend and access to more exotic furniture styles and woods. They could afford individual pieces designed for a specific purpose, such as card and gaming tables, tea tables and writing tables. Before this period, furniture tended to serve purely practical roles.
Characteristics
Feminine petite lines, beautiful proportioning and balance, restrained use of ornament.
The classic cabriole leg characterizes this style of furniture (cabriole: the leg has an out-curved knee and an incurved ankle)
Furniture Lines are simple, with emphasis on the curvilinear.
The choice of wood is predominantly oak, however walnut , cherry and maple are also often used.
